Undergraduate Scholarship

The Center for Materials Research Scholarship Program is funded by the United States Department of Energy. Each student receives a grant of $3,250.

  • As incoming freshmen, recipients may also be invited to attend a Summer Transition Program. While receiving a stipend of $800, students in the transition program will participate in academic enrichment activities and early orientation to university life.

  • As upper classmen, selected scholarship students may receive additional stipends while engaging in any of numerous fields of research.

Eligibility Requirements

Specific requirements must be met to satisfy eligibility:

  • The student must be admitted to Norfolk State University or a participating institution.

  • The student must enter as a freshman or as a student who has completed the Associate in Science degree.

  • The student must major in chemistry, physics, or materials science.

  • The student must have demonstrated potential in the sciences as evidenced by strength of high school coursework, GPA, SAT or ACT scores, and/or science club participation.

Application Dates

For early award notification, applicants should apply for admission to Norfolk State University or a participating institution and submit a scholarship application by the 15th of March.

Beginning in March, applications will be reviewed on the 15th of each month. Scholarships will continue to be awarded until funds are depleted.
