Shahin Maaref, Ph.D. Associate Research Professor
Education B.Sc., Chemistry, Pedagogical (Teacher Training) University, Tehran, Iran, 1989 M.Sc., Physical Chemistry, Azad University, Tehran, Iran, 1991 Ph.D. Chemistry/Polymeric Materials, State University of New York, New York, 1998 Career
Highlights Maaref worked with Distinguished Professor Harry
Frisch for several years at State University of New York. He joined
the faculty of Center for Materials Research (CMR) at Norfolk State
University (NSU) in 1998. He is a research associate at CMR and
adjunct faculty at Chemistry Department of NSU, Hampton University at
Hampton and Tidewater Community Collage (TCC) at Virginia Beach.
Research
Areas A part of Maaref's work is directed toward making better nonlinear optical polymeric materials using thin film technique and crosslinking process for device fabrication. He and Dr. Sun are exploring how the electronic and molecular structure of polymers influences their Electro-Optic properties. Devices fabricated from such materials can be used for the basic applications of electrical-to-optical signal changes and optical switching at nodes of an optical network. His other main research interests focuses on photovoltaic cell materials and photonic phenomena in polymers. His work emphasizes on nanoscale materials and architectural construction technique. The study of nanocomposites, conducting polymers, membrane catalysts, polysiloxanes, superconductors and interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN's) represents another major research efforts have been explored by him.
