Norfolk State University's Center for Materials Research was established to enhance the materials research capabilities at the university, to encourage faculty development of materials research activities, and to increase the number of minority students obtaining baccalaureate and graduate degrees in materials science disciplines. The Center provides cutting edge research opportunities in well-equipped research facilities using state of the art instrumentation for our graduate and undergraduate science majors.

Since its inception in 1992, the CMR has experienced steady growth in the areas of faculty, students, staff, and funded research and has provided leadership in promoting interdisciplinary faculty research activities. We have every expectation that the CMR will continue to grow and that the future programs will be even more exhilarating.

The faculty of the Center for Materials Research are energetic researchers dedicated to furthering knowledge in their respective disciplines. We focus on research problems of practical importance, and make substantive efforts to cooperate with business, industry, and government laboratories.

Students are vital team members who contribute to many aspects of our research while learning valuable research and technical skills.
